    1980s - 1990s: About a dozen band-run residential schools remain, with one school operated by the Government at band request. Gradually only a few remain. The last Government-run school closes in 1996, and the last band-run school in 1998.

    1992-1993: A research study is conducted in British Columbia to examine the effects of residential schools. A range of physical, sexual and psychological abuses is identified.

    School supervisor sentenced to 11 years for indecent assault

    1995: Arthur Henry Plint, former supervisor of the Alberta Indian residential school (1948-1953 and 1963-1968) pleads guilty to 16 counts of indecent assault and is sentenced to 11 years in prison.

    Unarmed protestor Dudley George killed by police sniper

    September 6, 1995: Dudley George is fatally wounded by a police sniper when the Ontario Provincial Police attack a small group of unarmed protestors occupying Ipperwash Provincial Park.
