1980s - 1990s: Final 12 Residential Schools Are Closed
1980s - 1990s: About a dozen band-run residential schools remain, with one school operated by the Government at band request. Gradually only a few remain. The last Government-run school closes in 1996, and the last band-run school in 1998.

1986 - 1994: Churches issue apologies for their role in residential schools: - United Church (1986) - RC Oblates of Mary Immaculate (1991) - Anglican Church (1993) - Presbyterian Church (1994).

March 9, 1988: Young native leader J.J. Harper is stopped by police who mistake him for a car thief. After a brief scuffle ensues, a shot is fired and Harper is killed.
